Russia signs inter-governmental agreement with Nigeria
At the VIII International Forum ATOMEXPO 2016, the Russia and Nigeria have signed an agreement on cooperation in construction of the Center for Nuclear Research and Technology in Nigeria.
The Russian side was represented by the Director General of ROSATOM Sergey Kirienko, and the Nigerian side was represented by the Director General of the Nuclear Energy Commission of Nigeria F. Erepano Osaisai.
The Agreement provides for a construction of a Center on the basis of the multi-purpose research two-circuit pool-type reactor of the Russian design and a nominal power rating of 10 MWt on the facility of the nuclear technological center in the city of Sheba-Abuja.
The Center will allow Nigeria to begin work on familiarization with nuclear technologies and their implementation in the fields of science, medicine, agriculture, as well as other fields of human activities. In particular, the Center will allow to start manufacturing in Nigeria the radio izotopes for widespread use in diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases, allowing to increase the availability of nuclear medicine to the country’s citizens.
The Center will be equipped with the cutting-edge equipment for performance of research within the framework of the National nuclear research program of Nigeria. Being the largest scientific and research base in the country for training of highly qualified specialists in various domains, the Center will promote the growth of specific education and science level in the country.
