E.ON Developed Airborne Wind Technology Demonstration Site in Ireland
E.ON has committed to invest in the development of Airborne Wind Technology construction and operation of a demonstration site in County Mayo in Ireland. In parallel, E.ON has entered into a collaboration agreement with Ampyx Power as the first user of the upcoming test site.
Airborne wind technology harvests wind energy by using a fixed wing or sail comparable to kite-surfing in altitudes up to 450 meters. This technology has the potential to transform the global offshore wind generation market as airborne wind devices are cheaper to manufacture and easier to maintain than conventional wind turbines. Additionally, they are easier deployed in deeper waters surrounding countries and can also be deployed onshore.
Developing a test site is an important stepping stone which enables E.ON to work closely with the most promising technology developers and to provide support for the commercialization of airborne wind technology. This landmark development opens up new possibilities for collaboration with a multitude of companies pioneering airborne wind power generation technology as well as being a platform working together with research and governmental institutes.
